A new season is under way and we are still learning to navigate the waters of farmer's markets. They say the only constant in life is change. They, whoever they are, were not lying. Each year we see growth. Each year we are blessed to have our tenured vendors come back with us. The seasons always ebb and flow and vendors come and go. This much we are very used to. Each season we learn of a new requirement or hoop we must learn to jump through, but somehow we manage. But every year we, as a market, always try to out do the previous year in some manner.
Are we begging for punishment or are we just always looking for the next challenge? You decide because honestly I am still not sure. I never saw myself as an event planner but here I am. It actually started last year as a glimmer of an idea while chatting with city personnel. As the season continued we continued to expand on this hair brained idea. And now we come to this year and the glimmer of an idea is a fully fledged event.
Freshly blessed and approved by the City of Owasso and in motion is our Backyard BBQ. We are adding a bbq cookoff to our National Farmers Market Week celebrations. Too much? Nah. The City of Owasso deserves their own cookoff and we have seen many new ones popping up around Green Country. It was time. We expect to learn alot from this innaugural year but only hope for it to thrive. It is a charity event and each hear we will pick a new charity. Potentially even asking the community to nominate one, i personally love this idea.
Some details so I don't continue to wax vague. We are inviting 10 to 15 cooking teams to set up at the Festival Park overnight and start cooking. There are four meat categories, bologna, pork butt, pork ribs, and chicken. Entry fee is 25.00 per category or 80.00 for all 4. Each cooking team will also be provided an additional pork butt to cook to enter into the People's Choice!
The closer we get to the event the more details will work out and make things run smoothly for the market team but it is still daunting. I know the Board can do anything we put our minds to and we have an amazing array of dedicated vendors. We will rise to this challenge and succeed.
But for now, have mercy on those running the market because between working our real jobs, running our small businesses amd keeping the market running and all the social media that takes, we are exhausted.
Stay hydrated and safe!
